Welcome to our official

2010 Deaf Tennessean Expo

Web Site!

.

On behalf of our 2010 Deaf Tennessean Expo Committee and TAD Board members, I want to THANK YOU for supporting our event We plan for September 18, 2010 at Southwest Tennessee Community College. This college has generously given a discount for Deaf Tennessean Expo 2010 and MCTAD to use their facilities.

We hope our MCTAD committee will make an outstanding contribution to the high standards set by the DTEs in 2006 and 2008. We're working to make the number of booths equal to, or even greater, than those in Nashville (2006) and Knoxville (2008).

We also thank all those major sponsors who have made our event possible. Please click on the link at the end of this page and check out the welcome page of the TAD web site.  We really appreciate these sponsors' continued support for  the Tennessee Association of the Deaf and its events like this.

We hope you will all show support for the Tennessee Association of the Deaf by attending the DTE and TAD conferences it hosts.

Wally Hodge

General Chairperson of Deaf Tennessean Expo 2010

Welcome to Memphis, Tennessee! Memphis is the biggest city in the southwest corner of Tennessee and the county seat of Shelby.  Memphis is located on the fourth Chickasaw Bluff, south of the confluence of the Wolf and Mississippi Rivers. Memphis is in the Mid-South, which consists of east Arkansas, north Mississippi and the southwest corner of Tennessee. Memphis is the largest city in the Mid-South area.

Memphis, Tennessee has many outstanding places to visit in the West Tennessee area of the Mid-South. You can find more information from www.memphisdeafcommunity.org/memphis_tourist.htm and www.cityofmemphis.org. These two URLs will show you many of the interesting places you can travel to. You can visit 10 different casinos which are in the northern part of Mississippi only a short drive from Memphis. Other places of interest include Graceland, Beale Street, IMAX, the Memphis Zoo, the Redbirds Baseball stadium, Mud Island, the ducks at Peabody Hotel, the FedEx Forum, and many more. We also have many excellent restaurants.

West Tennessee School for the Deaf was begun at the University of Memphis and later moved to Jackson, Tennessee, about an hour's drive away. The West Tennessee School for the Deaf currently serves 50 students ages 2 to 13 this year. These children come from throughout West Tennessee. You may find more information at http://www.wtsd.tn.org/. And also Memphis has five mainstream schools where deaf students attend. In addition Memphis has Memphis Oral School for the Deaf (MOSD). The mainstream schools have a total of about 200 deaf and hard of hearing students. MOSD has 24 deaf and hard of hearing children enrolled and emphasizes oral education without sign language.

On November 24, 2009 we toured Southwest Tennessee Community College (SWTCC) and found it an excellent area for DTE because of a good number of hotels and restaurants nearby! Four areas have been made available to DTE on September 18, 2010: 1) The Gym for booths as well as a stage for Deaf shows; 2) A covered walk outside where deaf people can go outside for socializing and relaxation; 3) A building nearby with a large hall for additional booths; and 4) A large cafeteria where we can have three caterers, See the picture of the SWTCC sign.

We encourage all of you to show support for the Tennessee Association for the Deaf (TAD) by attending its DTE and TAD conferences. We encourage you, if you haven't already, to become members of TAD and help the future become bright for younger generations of deaf people!
